1-Methylnaphthalene is an aromatic hydrocarbon of the formula C11H10. Because it is relatively non-flammable, its cetane number is set to zero, used to formulate a fuel with a certain cetane number, and the flammability of other fuels is compared. However, since 1-methylnaphthalene is uneconomical and difficult to handle, isohexadecane (2,2,4,4,6,8,8-heptamethylnonane) having a cetane number of 15 is usually used instead.
The main use of 1-methylnaphthalene is as a raw material for naphthoic acid, fluorescent whitening agents, and surfactants. It is also used as a raw material for dyestuff dispersants and heat transfer oils, and as a solvent for agricultural chemical. 1-methylnaphthalene is used to make other chemicals such as dyes and resins.
